The field of medicine has been practiced since the dawn of time. Many early civilizations such as the Aztec, Egyptians, Chinese and Native Americans (among many others) followed the direction/teachings of a local shaman (a.k.a. medicine man).
The earliest recorded medical texts are from about 2,000 B.C. with instruction for surgical methods and with herbal remedies. The Greek physician Hippocrates, known as the ‘father of medicine,’ introduced the Hippocratic Oath which physicians uphold. The oath is a promise to uphold specific ethical standards which remain relevant to this day.
Today, medical education and careers can vary significantly across the world. In the U.S. on average, this preparation can take 10-14 years to complete. Many aspiring physicians start their education with a bachelor’s degree (typically Pre-Med) from a University and transition to a master’s degree from a medical school.
Following this, an internship or residency is usually secured at a hospital or clinic in the specialty they are pursuing. Lastly, they become a licensed physician after completing their board certification exams and some continue their education to the doctorate level.
All physicians are classified into many different specialties. Some of the most well-known are Allergy, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Forensic, Geriatrics, Hematology, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Radiology, Surgical and many others.

It is also equally important for new movers to connect with their new physician or specialist before they run into an emergency as well as staying connected for routine health assessments.
