This month we are sharing an organization that is near and dear to us, Special Olympics Florida. A few of us here at Welcome Wagon have personal involvement and support this 501(c)(3) charitable organization. I have personally spent time with a child participating in an Olympic event. The joy and sense of purpose this organization brings to so many people and their friends and families is inspiring. A positive side effect, it is rewarding and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.
There are so many ways to get involved from making a donation, volunteering your time, becoming a coach, attending events, shopping for merchandise, starting a local chapter, and more.
Special Olympics Florida shares on their website:
Special Olympics is a worldwide movement where one can act locally but make a global impact.
With over 103,500 competitions around the world each year — with training taking place every day, with family leaders, athlete leaders and volunteers extending our message every day — Special Olympics is NOT an event. We are a movement, inviting the world not just to attend Games but to think, feel, and act differently about everything – to come help create a world of acceptance and inclusion for all.
And there’s a place for you! We want people who share in our spirit of acceptance, fun and determination to change the world, one life at a time.
Our General Manager, Michele Maxfield and her family are big supporters of Special Olympics Florida. Every Saturday morning in January – May, the family attends while her son participates in sporting events. It has made a very positive impact on their lives. Michele thoughtfully shared, “Our family is dedicated to volunteering at the Special Olympics with my son and we find it is an inspiring time to start the weekend. I’ve learned so much from others and it’s a great way to appreciate everyone & their differences.”
We are fans of the Special Olympics because we know how impactful it can be and there are so many ways to be a part of this exciting organization. You can make a difference too! Below are some links to get you started. They are all over the United States so if you are not in FL, you can find a local chapter by going to their main site.
